THE president of the Law Society of the ACT, Martin Hockridge, and the president of the ACT Bar Association,  Shane Gill, have welcomed the announcement of funding for a fifth judge,  but expressed disappointment regarding increased court fees outlined in the ACT Budget.

“The legal profession has consistently highlighted the need for a fifth Supreme Court judge to manage the court’s caseload,” they said.

“The Government’s decision to fund a fifth judge is good news and this additional capacity will increase the court’s ability to quickly provide just outcomes.

“The decision to substantially increase court lodgement fees for civil matters, however, will disproportionately affect those in our community that can least afford it. A significant increase in court fees is of concern where it impacts the ability of disadvantaged members of our community to access the justice system.

“We do however note the government’s continued commitment to the restorative justice program and acknowledge the potential benefits of adequately resourced restorative justice initiatives. Plans to help vulnerable people avoid contact with the criminal law through the high-density housing program are also supported.

“The Society and the Bar also welcome the earlier announced increase in funding to the Legal Aid Commission and to continued support for Street Law.”
