Canberra Confidential / The fancy face of fashion

WHEN it comes to fashion, we at CC alas know only what we like. But we like the idea of Fashfest. So does snapper Andrew Campbell, who took his nosey lens to the opening night of this year’s Fashfest at the Canberra Convention Centre to shoot some superb runway pics for our citynews.com.au coverage. His selection includes a strange range of floral mouth masks. Fashionable maybe, but clearly there’ll be no kissing on the first date.

Music (not quite) at Midday

ANYONE else confused? The RMC Band’s much-loved “Music at Midday” charity performance at Canberra Theatre every month isn’t actually at noon. Such is its popularity that there are two shows (Music at 11am and Music at 12.30pm). Cancer-support group Bosom Buddies ACT is the beneficiary of the June 1 shows.

Pete gets the nod

Pete Davidson.

2CC’s program director Pete Davidson has been kicked upstairs and will replace the retiring Don Dawkins as the Capital Radio Network’s group program director from July 1. Still based in Mitchell, Davidson will be responsible for the programming of the group’s radio interests in Canberra (2CC and 2CA), Victoria and WA. He says it’s an exciting time for the group, “including construction of a new studio complex for Canberra to commence shortly”.

The inside word

Velez-Villar
Eric Velez-Villar.
THE man responsible for the FBI’s intelligence work, Eric Velez-Villar, appears to have flushed out the city’s spooks for his lecture on the effects of 9/11 and the FBI’s intelligence role and evolution since then.

He’s speaking at the Australian American Association Canberra Forum at the ANU on Friday, May 29. Tickets? Not a chance, says association president Alicia Doherty. Spookily, they sold out in a matter of hours.

In the know, we think

Glenn Keys
ACTION man from Aspen Medical, ACT Australian of the Year and incoming chairman of the Canberra Business Chamber, Glenn Keys, was well into an engaging profile hour on the “CityNews Sunday Roast” on 2CC, enthusing about revitalising Civic saying that he “thinks” there’s a plan to save the place coming soon. Thinks or knows, the “Roast” panel asked? Despite a passing blush, he wasn’t for turning and the affable interview pressed on.

Inspiring Pat

Retiring footballer Pat McCabe… the “go to” man.
Pat McCabe.
AFTER breaking his neck for the third time, rugby’s Pat McCabe, at only 26-years-old, concluded that retirement wasn’t a “particularly hard decision”.

A star for the Brumbies and Wallabies since 2010, Pat’s going to be the guest speaker for Menslink at its monthly Midweeker event at Gryphons, Griffith shops.

Menslink’s Martin Fisk reckons it’s going to be an “inspiring talk, for rugby fans and those people wanting to hear tales of overcoming hardship”.

Entry is free and open to all, and Pat’s talk starts at 5.45pm.

Orangutans and raspberries

orangutanWHAT’S not to love about an orangutan with attitude? Therese O’Brien, the ACT representative for the Orangutan Project, says they’re critically endangered and has organised a trivia night to raise funds to help save them. Jungle attire is encouraged and the night will feature prizes, games, raffle, silent auction and more. It’s at the Eastlake Football Club, on June 13. Cost is $25 and bookings to orangutan.org.au/upcoming-events.

Head in the clouds

Jessica Hart.
AFTER all the haranguing and sackings, the Transport Workers’ Union will be buoyed to know that Qantas is hiring again. The dividend-challenged airline is “teaming up” with Australian supermodel Jessica Hart who will become a, ahem, trend consultant to Qantas “to connect what’s trending in fashion to what Qantas customers can experience in-flight and on the ground”. So there, Virgin!

Dead funny

THE rebranded Icon Water tweets something it calls a “Friday funny” and our Twitter snout thought it odd and unfunny to see the ACT’s water utility making jokes about poisoning (H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide).

The local fiano that punches above its weight

"The Collector fiano was perfect to drink on a hot day: crisp, textural and with an element of preserved lemon. It is not a low-alcohol wine with a nudge above 13 per cent alcohol by volume," writes wine columnist RICHARD CALVER.
