Chapman home destroyed by fire

A HOUSE in Chapman has this morning been destroyed by fire.

ACT Fire & Rescue was alerted to the fire in Tauchert Street just before 2 o’clock.

A woman, who was the only occupant of the home, called Emergency Triple Zero (000) to raise the alarm after safely evacuating herself.

Fire crews arrived a short time after to find the property fully engulfed in flames.

The roof of the house collapsed as multiple fire crews worked to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage but will be investigated.

The initial estimated damage bill is $500,000.

The fire has been extinguished but a crew will remain on scene to put out any hot spots that may start up.

The house is located near a school and some minor traffic disruptions may occur this morning due to the presence of fire appliances on scene.

The sole occupant of the home, an elderly woman, was asleep when the fire started but was woken by a smoke alarm and safely evacuated herself from the property.

The cause will be investigated but is not suspicious.

ACT Fire & Rescue reminds the community about the importance of having working smoke alarms.

“This is another example of how working smoke alarms save lives.”
