Citizen arrests man after shopping-centre assault

A CITIZEN’S arrest has resulted in a 20-year-old Lyons man facing court following an assault on a man sitting outside Westfield Woden  in Phillip on Sunday afternoon.

Police-station-0553-175x175The alleged offender was followed from the scene by a member of the public, who then made a citizen’s arrest.

With the assistance of  the shopping centre’s security, the 20-year-old was restrained until police arrived and arrested him. He will face court later this month charged with assault.

Police superintendent Cath Grassick said the arrest showed that the community finds this type of crime unacceptable.

“We don’t recommend engaging with an offender, however in this instance the alleged offender was able to be restrained and handed over to police,” she said.

Anyone who saw the incident and has not yet spoken to police should call 1800 333 000, or via act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
