Coe wants to know why the ACT Government is fiddling its polling

capital metro

ALISTAIR Coe says Simon Corbell needs to explain to Canberrans why a $29,000 taxpayer funded poll on light rail was altered before it was conducted.

“It’s clear that the government interfered with key questions to get a more politically favourable result on the popularity of light rail, Alistair said.

“Documents obtained by the Canberra Liberals under Freedom of Information (FOI) show in 2014 the government rejected questions from contracted firm Piazza Research, before writing its own loaded questions.

“The rewritten questions were designed to spruik the government’s own message on light rail, which ultimately induced a more favourable response when respondents were asked if they supported light rail.

“It’s very disappointing that Simon Corbell and ACT Labor would so recklessly misuse taxpayers money as they scramble to create the facade that light rail is popular with Canberrans.

“If the government is so confident that light rail is worth the billion dollar price tag, why would this polling be necessary to begin with? Furthermore, why would they feel the need to change the questions?

“The fact is the Barr government spent tens of thousands of dollars for a polling firm to conduct research on light rail, only to change many of the questions to garner a better response.

“This attempt to skew polling results is typical of a government that fails to respect Canberrans views. Light rail needs to be taken to next October’s ACT Election for Canberrans to decide,” Mr Coe concluded.

One Response to Coe wants to know why the ACT Government is fiddling its polling

The Barr government is irresponsible in its handling of light rail. It keeps warning of the costs associated with cancelling the light rail development contract as it knows that project is unpopular yet it continues to proceed with it. The Barr government is trying to force Canberrans into having light rail, whereas a responsible government would delay all contract commitments until after the October 2016 election as Alistair Coe suggests. As part of the next election ACT voters should be asked, in an unbiased manner, if they wish to proceed with the project.

The opinion polls that the Barr government produces are so blatantly one sided they are not worth responding to. They have established a website so that people can have their say about the Capital Metro project, but you won’t find any of the polls on the site allowing you to reject light rail.

As an example, their latest poll question is “When you travel to over cities do you use public transport?” and it only provides “yes” or “no” answers. “Yes”, of course, includes the occasionally response, and “No” in a respondent’s mind would equate to “never”… so most people will answer “Yes” in this clearly skewed poll. A poll that gave a true answer to this question would ask for a percentage of public transport use and these could be easily tallied up.

Unfortunately the Barr government is acting very irresponsibly, not just about light rail but with many of their policies. I sincerely hope that Canberra votes responsibly in the next ACT election and the Barr government is heavily voted out of office.
