Costly tram heads off in a new direction

CANBERRA taxpayers won’t die wondering as the Minister for Capital Metro calls for costs to extend the controversial light rail project from Civic to Russell.

CapitalMetro-3d-Train-2“The ACT government will ask consortia to include the extension as an option in their proposals following strong support from the ACT community and the local business industry,” says Simon Corbell.

“A decision on the extension’s viability can then be made based on detailed commercial costings.

“Should the extension to Russell be included as part of stage one it will provide an extra 5600 trips per day, an increase in patronage of more than 30 per cent.”

The proposed extension will provide a direct link from Russell to Gungahlin. The extension from Alinga Street to Russell would be via London Circuit and Constitution Avenue,  where current upgrade work has already been designed to be light rail ready.

“The 3.2km extension would provide four additional stops – three along the corridor and a terminus at Russell – that would link the CBD with the 8000 employees in the Defence precinct,” Mr Corbell says.

“This would add not only extra passengers in the peak travel times, but would also provide a viable and attractive option for workers to make trips to and from Russell during the day, providing a boost for the retail industry in the CBD and along the light rail route.”

The ACT Government has committed to a city to Gungahlin light rail line with a projected cost of between $800 million and $1 billion to be completed by 2019. The Canberra Liberals say they will halt to project if they are elected to government in 2016.

Has CityNews verified these figures before publishing? It would be useful to know where the 5600 extra patrons figure came from… It seems as though an unreasonably high percentage of Russell’s 8000 employees would be expected to use the service. Most Defence employees park at work, at least prior to the introduction of paid parking in the ‘Parliamentary Triangle’ (which seems to have been extended north of the Lake at the NCA’s revenue-generating convenience from the ‘Parliament Zone’ definition in the Parliament Act 1974… but that’s another issue). As such, these figures seem exceedingly unlikely.

So basically the extension to Russell will make an already northside-centric light rail …. even more northside centric?!!!

I think someone might have forgotten to tell Capital Metro and Govt Ministers that Canberra actually extends south of the lake, and 50% of the population lives, votes and pays taxes there.

If they really wanted to increase patronage, Stage 1 should have run from Belco to the Parliamentary Triange via University of Canberra, Bruce Stadium, Calvary, ANU, Civic, Russell. Maybe onto Kingston too. That would make it attractive to students and tourists also, not just peak hour commuters. Note that Belconned to City is already the busiest bus route in Canberra, so the evidence is there to support this route. By going to both sides of the lake it would also be easier to justify and sell politically than a light rail that conveniently goes past the houses of the three Ministers/Chief Ministers who approved it, but leaves 93% of Canberrans in the lurch. We’ll just have to cop the bill.
