Cross border surgery deal

NSW Minister for Health Jillian Skinner and Simon Corbell have announced a new partnership to provide local surgical services for NSW patients who are currently on ACT waiting lists.

The arrangement between ACT Health and the Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD) provides for some low-risk elective surgeries and caesarean births for NSW-based patients to be performed in Queanbeyan and Bega Hospitals instead of in the ACT.

Simon said the partnership would address elective surgery waiting lists delivering high-level health services for cross-border patients, who now will be able to undergo their surgery closer to where they live.

“We know there is high demand on our services and this agreement is another step towards reducing the pressure on the ACT Health system, particularly in the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology and general surgery,” Simon said.

Mrs Skinner said was a common sense investment which would deliver countless benefits for local patients and their loved ones.

“Our focus with this new arrangement is to improve patient access for elective surgeries and low-risk or planned caesareans and it gives our great hospitals in southern NSW the opportunity to care for their communities,” Jillian said.

“The NSW Government will fund the additional services and provide all the resources required, including medical and nursing staff to manage patient care.”

Patients will be contacted shortly regarding their ACT surgery and the availability of their treatment being offered at a hospital closer to where they live.

It is expected that this will provide up to 300 NSW-based patients with access to surgery within NSW until July 2015 and approximately 660 patients next year.
