Dance to put bullying in its place

BULLYING gets the thumbs down in Tuggeranong Arts Centre’s Fresh Funk mid-semester show, “Stand Up”, coming to the Erindale Theatre this weekend.

Fresh Funk’s young dancers aim to battle bullying by tackling issues of cause-and-effect. The show explores many forms of bullying, including: physical, emotional, exclusion and cyber-bullying.

Within the framework of urban dance, and utilising the very latest in hip-hop and contemporary music, the narrative speaks directly to both victims and bullies, exploring the cycles that connect them.

Fresh Funk’s artistic director, Caroline Wall, says examples of bullying are found everywhere. “In Australia, one in every four students in primary and high schools will be bullied,” Wall says, “Bullying is widely reported in colleges, and we’re seeing an increase in the number of reported cases of bullying and harassment in workplaces across the country.”

In her view, it can cause emotional problems, both at the time and later in life so we all need to work together and ‘stand up’. The 300 strong “Stand Up” cast of adults and children plans to get the audience rethinking their commitment to combatting bullying — through dance.

“Stand Up”, at Erindale Theatre, on June 26 and 27. Bookings to trybooking.com or 6293 1443.
