Dickson Coles development knocked on the head

THE Planning and Land Authority’s Chief Planning Executive Dorte Ekelund says they have refused a Development Application for the Coles/Doma supermarket and mixed use residential development in Dickson.

“Following the initial assessment of this development application a number of issues were identified, largely to do with the design of the building,” Dorte said.

“The final conclusion drawn from the assessment is that the proposed development, in both its original and revised iterations, could not be supported.

“The quality of any future development of this site is very important, as it will ‘set the tone’ for future redevelopment in Dickson.

“The Planning and Land Authority will continue to work with the proponents of this site to ensure a successful outcome for all parties is achieved.

“The proponent now has the opportunity to consider appropriate changes to their proposal or to approach the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal.”

Dickson Residents Group spokeswoman and urban planning consultant Jane Goffman has expressed her pleasure.

“The plans we saw at the start of this year failed the common sense test. Apparently the amended plans did too.

“The Dickson Master Plan spells out a progressive urban design agenda, which the community strongly supports and the proposal ignored.

“Business as usual doesn’t cut the mustard, we need high quality proposals with real vision based on the best of modern urbanism and sustainable design.

“We congratulate the government’s planning officers for having the courage and conviction to stand up to powerful interests and insist on a better outcome for this city as a whole.”
