Eight new cameras to make the Crawford Street taxi rank safe

council chambers

QUEANBEYAN Mayor Tim Overall says eight new CCTV cameras were made operational last Friday to improve safety at the Crawford St taxi rank.

“The installation and commissioning of these new CCTV cameras in Queanbeyan’s CBD will help increase safety for taxi passengers, drivers and the general public,” Tim said.

“In applying for the funding, Queanbeyan Police informed Council that a number of issues were reported in the Queanbeyan CBD and specifically near the Crawford St taxi rank.

“Queanbeyan Police described the installation of the cameras as an invaluable tool for their investigations and would allow enable police to respond in a timely manner to disturbances and prevent offences occurring as well as deterring anti-social behaviour.

“The footage captured by the CCTV cameras will be live streamed to the Queanbeyan Police Station and footage will be recorded and stored by Queanbeyan City Council.

Three of the cameras are located on a pole adjacent to the Council Chambers, while the other five are located on the Westpac building on the corner of Crawford and Monaro Sts.

The cameras monitor the taxi rank on the corner of Crawford and Monaro St, the front of the Council Chambers and along Monaro St.

The installation of the CCTV cameras cost about $170,000 and was fully funded by the Federal Government’s Safer Suburbs Taxi Scheme. The project also included the installation of additional seats at the taxi rank. Queanbeyan City Council has allocated $20,000 in the 2015-16 budget for operation, maintenance and ongoing upkeep for the system.

Access to recorded material will be facilitated by Council and will only take place if required by Police, is necessary for legal proceedings or any other lawful requirement.
