Mick moves to protect Canberra’s “retail hierarchy”

Mick Gentleman

MICK Gentleman says retailers will have greater certainty about future development in neighbouring local centres following the introduction of floor area limits.

“I have approved these changes to the Territory Plan based on a comprehensive review of the ACT Supermarket Competition Policy, which responded to concerns from the community about development in our commercial zones,” Mick said.

Variation 304 will allow the following changes;

  • Limits of 1000m2 GFA for shops in commercial CZ4 local centres;
  • Limits of 1500m2 for shops in commercial CZ5 mixed use zones; and
  • Minor amendment to the commercial zones objectives to improve access, particularly for people with mobility issues.

“These changes will protect the retail hierarchy in Canberra so that businesses can have certainty about new development in neighbouring local centres.

“I would also like to make it clear that this will not affect any established group centres that currently are at or above this limit.

“Draft variation 304 was prepared in response to the recommendations of the Select Committee on the ACT Supermarket Competition Policy, and is in line with the government’s vision for future group centres.

“The draft variation has been further refined following input from the community during the public consultation period between March and May 2013.

A commencement date will be set for Variation 304, following tabling in the Legislative Assembly in early 2015.
