IT’S a busy week in the Canberra arts scene, no less in the middle of the week than at the weekend.

THE CAPITAL JAZZ PROJECT is top of the bill, with Italian pianist Stefano Bollani joining ‘the Jimi Hendrix of the mandolin, Brazilian musician Hamilton de Holanda, at 7.30pm tomorrow June 3 at The Street Theatre. Last night de Holanda took part in a “Meet the Artist” event at the Brazilian Embassy. “What I do is a synthesis of tradition with an influence from choro, bossa nova, jazz, and sounds from the street… It is a music that does not need labels to exist”, he said. THEN on June 4, also at 7.30pm at The Street, The Embassy of Colombia’s Ospina Brothers, will also be taking part in The Capital Jazz Project. Juan Andrés Ospina and Nicolás Ospina are exponents of an outstanding generation of Colombian jazz and will collaborate on stage with New York-based Argentinian musicians Andres Rotmistrovsky (bass and Marcelo Woloski (percussion), winner of a Latin Grammy for his participation in the best children’s album in 2014. IN TOMORROW’S “Wednesday Lunchtime Live” soprano

will be accompanied by composer Calvin Bowman in a program for voice and piano consisting of works by Bach, Handel, Samuel Barber, Richard Strauss, Roger Quilter and Sally Whitwell. The centrepiece will be a selection of Calvin Bowman’s most admired songs. Lankshear is a keen young musician who, under the direction of Louise Page, is studying for her Bachelor of Music specialising in classical singing at the ANU School of Music. Bowman has been described by Richard Mills as “the finest exponent of artsong composition we have in Australia” “Chloe & Calvin on Wednesday” at the Wesley Music Centre, June 3, 12.40 – 1.20pm. HAPPY NEWS from Tempo Theatre that after a successful Belconnen run, its “Spider’s Web” trip to The Arts Centre Cootamundra was a great success. “We were made feel very welcome and the audiences were very appreciative of the show. People travelled from near and far to see the show (Wagga, Cooma, and the other side of Young)”, director Jon Elphick tells us “Just goes to show the power of Agatha [Christie] to draw a crowd.”
