“THE man who listens to horses” is coming to Canberra in May.
Monty Roberts, the award-winning trainer of championship horses and author, will talk about his non-violent horse training technique “Join-Up”.
The California-born trainer will present practical horsemanship seminars on how to communicate with horses and overcome the everyday problems many owners experience with them.
Keith Lawrence, of Cardinal Events Management, says: “Through the language of Equus and the principles of ‘Join-Up’, Monty has shown millions of people how to create willing partnerships and establish a bond of communication, co-operation and trust with horses”.
“Join-Up” is a training technique that involves the trainer making large movements and noises in a round pen in order to drive the horse away.
The trainer then gives the horse the option to flee or “Join-Up” and, through body language, will ask the horse to follow.
Monty developed this concept while tracking mustangs in Nevada as a young boy. He observed the herd behaviour of the horses and realised they used predictable body language to communicate with each other – a silent language known as Equus.
He discovered that mimicking this behaviour would be a more effective and humane training technique that creates a partnership between horse and human.
Up to 800 people are expected to attend Roberts’ two-day seminar, which will be held at the Canberra Equestrian Centre on May 2-3.
