SIMON Corbell says complaints against the ACT’s judges and magistrates that don’t merit removal from office will now be handled by a Judicial Council with the passing of the Judicial Complaints Bill in the Legislative Assembly yesterday.

The Bill has created a new statutory framework for the handling of judicial complaints in the ACT.

“This was an ACT Labor election commitment, and was the subject of substantial consideration and consultation,” Simon said.

“I would like to thank the judiciary and legal profession for their contributions to, and support for, this new framework.

“This important reform will increase transparency and accountability, while maintaining judicial independence and promoting community confidence in the justice system.”

The new complaints handling regime formalises an effective process for managing complaints that don’t merit consideration of removal of a judicial officer from office.

The new council will consist of the Chief Justice, Chief Magistrate and representatives of the legal profession and general community.

“It will have powers to receive, report and investigate complaints – and to take appropriate action to address the complaints
