SIMON Corbell has thanked Dr Peggy Brown, outgoing Director-General of ACT Health for her decade of service to the people of the Canberra community.

“On behalf of all the staff at ACT Health we are honoured to have worked with someone so passionate about the delivery of high quality health services, and I sincerely thank Dr Brown for her commitment and dedication to ACT Health and the Canberra community,” Simon said.

Mr Corbell said Dr Brown had led the ACT Health Directorate through a period of successful growth and change.

“Dr Brown has made a tremendous contribution to the ACT’s public health system during her tenure. She commenced in ACT Health as ACT Chief Psychiatrist in 2004, and then took on the role as Director of Mental Health Services in 2005, before her appointment to the role of Director-General in 2010.

“During the past five years as Director-General, Dr Brown has been a visionary and inspirational leader in what is a complex area of government service delivery,” Simon said.

“Dr Brown has overseen the delivery of a range of important health infrastructure projects for the ACT community, including the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, the Canberra Region Cancer Centre and the introduction of two Walk-In Centres.

“Dr Brown has also been a passionate advocate for mental health consumers and service delivery. She has provided leadership in national mental health policy development and implementation over the past decade and has worked tirelessly on many national committees and boards to shape consumer focused policy, ensure that consumers and carers have greater influence and control over their experiences within mental health services.

“The ACT is now in the position to be a national leader in all areas of mental health service delivery thanks to Dr Brown. She has been most influential in the areas of reducing rates of seclusion and restraint, championing consumer and carer participation and quality improvement,” Mr Corbell said.

Dr Brown’s achievements also include being the first recipient of the prestigious Margaret Tobin Award in 2013. This prestigious award is made to a RANZCP Fellow who has made the most significant contribution to administrative psychiatry in Australian and New Zealand over the preceding five years.
