Queanbeyan development plans kicked to the curb

council chambers

THE ABC has a report of dramatic scenes at Queanbeyan Council last night where long nurtured plans to develop the city down to the river were shredded by the councillors.

A surprise motion put to council last night succeeded by just one vote, putting a freeze on multimillion-dollar redevelopment plans.

Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said he was dumbfounded by the council’s decision.

“We had a surprise notice of motion from Councillor Jamie Creegan only on a couple of days’ notice that was in the business paper to stop all work and stop business spending on this major visionary project,” he said.

Mr Overall told 666 ABC Canberra he was angry that the successful motion would potentially see the transfer of the redevelopment’s funds to a separate proposal to build a cinema.

“The community have a right to be absolutely outraged at this because this project, this riverfront CBD stage two project, concluding upgrades to Monaro Street was the key project in our four-year delivery plan adopted by this council in 2013,” he said.
