Raw comedy tonight – and other arts all weekend

UK comedy duo Max & Ivan will MC the ACT RAW Comedy State Final tonight, Thursday, March 19 from, 8:30pm (Doors 8:10pm) in the ANU Arts Centre.

THE winning competitor will then head to Melbourne next month to compete in the National Grand Final at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Yes, it’s all part of the Canberra Comedy Festival running in the Canberra Theatre Centre, ANU Arts Centre, Novotel Canberra, Teatro Vivaldi and The Civic Pub until Sudnay March 22. YOU Are Here 2015 is already upon us and the experimental theatre group KREWD presents “A KREWD Chorale” at 9pm this Saturday, March 21 in Bible Lane, Civic. It’s one of six theatre pieces devised for You Are Here’s ‘Dangerous Territory’ and is an unapologetically feminist live-art installation piece. When you look at the list of creatives, you’ll see what we mean. The directors are Katie Woodward, Joe Woodward (Shadow House PITS), Casey Elder and Steven Bailey and the performers are Miri Slate, Lucy Matthews, Kat Bramston, Gina Morrison, Alison McGregor, Harley Quinn, Anna Judith, barb barnett and Sarah Michelle Thomson.

THE High Court of Australia’s next FREE concert this Sunday, March 22 at the usual time of 1:30pm features no fewer than two Canberra women composer-pianists, Sally Whitwell and Sally Greenaway.  Organisers at the court say it is valuable for us as Canberrans to acknowledge, appreciate and enjoy their success now rather than looking back retrospectively.  All welcome.

THE NEWEST new Griffyn Ensemble project is “Griffyn Solos,” a series of concerts showcasing a different side of each member of the ensemble. It kicks off this Sunday March 22 at Belconnen Arts Centre, from 6.00-7.15pm, with doors and bar opening at 5.30pm. Griffyn’s Kiri Sollis and guest artist James Huntingford in a program of Baroque music for flute and harpsichord.

THE National Film & Sound Archive of Australia will host the Taiwan Film Festival March 20 to 22. Opening night film is Hou Hsiao-hsien historical film “A City of Sadness”, the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion-winner in 1989. Opening night screening 6:30pm Friday, March 20. THE 7th Annual Hall Twilight Concert is at Victoria Street Hall in the Primary School grounds on Sunday March 22 at 5 pm. Canberra Brass supported by Victoria Street Brass and Brass Quintet will play popular tunes of the First World War and show tunes while Rebekkah Sawkins will sing popular songs.Sausage sizzle available. SUNSHINE Coast collective Hayden Hack Infusion is described as a funk, Afro and psychedelic aesthetic.” It’s driven by the South African front man Hack and his eight-piece funk family. Hack and his band have shared the stage with the likes of Dachambo (Japan) Kooii, Kingfisha and Afro-Dizzi Act and captivated audiences at Woodford Folk Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Island Vibe and Kuranda Roots Festival. DANNY Wild is no stranger to Canberra Contemporary Art Space or the Canberra arts scene at large, making his mark with music, performance and sound so CCAS is very excited about his immersive audio-visual installation “Quick Fix” at CCAS Manuka. Tonight’s opening will feature an expanded version with a live modular synthesizer performance from 6pm. Runs until March 29 at 19 Furneaux Street, Manuka, Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm.

THE “As I See it…” exhibition is running again in Gundaroo. Organiser Dr Roger Meischke tells us that the exhibitors are watercolourist Carla Begbie from Rossi, inspiring young Year 9 Campbell High student and photographer Sam Chapman and former Parliament House photographer Howard Moffat. SENIORS Week Twilight Market and “Capturing the Moment” photographic exhibition ‘Honouring the Seniors of Southside’ runs until April 10, 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. LOCAL hip-hop duo Coda Conduct (Erica and Sally) have been upsetting Queanbeyanites with their satirical lyrics, but undaunted, they’re launching their debut EP, “Butter Side Up” at Transit Bar this Saturday, March 21. The EP was partially created with the help of a crowdfunding campaign, and the first single, “Knowledge is King” has been played on Triple J and been added to rotation on Triple J Unearthed.

ANCA Gallery presents “Going Steady”, an exhibition curated by Annika Harding featuring early career artists who studied painting at the ANU School of Art late last decade. The artists – Emma Beer, Julie Brooke, Chris Carmody (NSW), Fernando Do Campo (USA), James Lieutenant (NSW), Natalie Mather (VIC), Suzanne Moss, Elena Papanikolakis (NSW), Dionisia Salas – have all exhibited extensively across Australia and increasingly internationally since that. BELCONNEN Arts Centre has a host of exhibitions on show right now, all up until April 12. ‘The Carved Line,’ comprises playful three–dimensional pieces by Christine Upton. Then in the Arts Lounge is “More… Re–Emergence”, a collection of work in clay, by Robyn Campbell. Seeking Humanity: Wendy Sharpe” in the foyer presents portraits and stories of Australia’s asylum seekers and refugees. The exhibition is not about politics, but puts a human face to those who have fled situations of great danger in their home country in search of safety and freedom in Australia. Members of the public are invited to attend the Meet the artist session with Sharpe on Friday,March 20 at 4:00pm at Belconnen Arts Centre, Emu Bank, Belconnen.

STRATHNAIRN Arts is presenting “Allsorts”, a collaborative exhibition of paintings, from today, March 19 until April 12. The show will be opened by Michael Boyle at 4pm this Saturday, March 21 at Strathnairn Homestead Gallery. Stockdill Dr Holt. This collaborative exhibition features the work of six distinctly different Canberran artists: Katie Volter, Debby Gairns, Stephanie Boyle, Louise Spencer, Annie Florence and Anne Balcomb, who have been meeting weekly for over four years to explore and develop together their art practices.
