A Riderless Horse and other arts this weekend

AS part of the 2015 Queanbeyan Heritage Festival and the ANZAC Centenary, Queanbeyan Museum is presenting ‘The Riderless Horse – An Australian Impression of World War 1 in Song’, a 60 minute FREE concert.

“FROM the rousing songs of nationalistic fervour, to the soldiers’ brave faced morale boosters composed on the spot in the trenches and sung by many voices, to the ballads of those left behind to watch and wait”. The presentation has been arranged chronologically and the performers are Chloe & Jason Roweth, known for playing traditional and contemporary Australian bush and traditional music in fresh arrangements for two vocals, guitar and mandolin. At Queanbeyan Museum, 10 Farrer Pl, (Canberra Ave) Queanbeyan, 1pm, April 18. Admission: Free.

THE debut show of a new theatre company called Honest Puck is ‘Underneath the Lintel,’ a one-man play performed by James Scott and directed by John Concannon of “The Boffin, the Builder and the Bombardier” fame (ABCTV). ‘THE Young Guns’ are promising under-40s entrepreneurs are in the early stages of their entrepreneurial journey, and are sharing their stories from the trenches and fresh lessons in Entry 29’s fortnightly ‘Founders Series’ program. To date he has won the Red Dot Design Award, The Enterprising Young Brit Award, The Courvoisier Future 500 Art & Design Award, and the ACT Export Award.

IN the past, the dolls from artist Brenda Runnegar’s vintage doll collection have been used as models for her artwork but in ‘Capture’, a new series of paintings and large–scale composite digital works, they will have a ‘voice’ of their own and can, she says, “can at times be faintly disturbing, even sinister, but can also express hope, joy sadness and above all – humour.” Exhibition opening Friday 17 April at 5:30pm, all welcome. Meet the artist Saturday 18 April, 2pm. The exhibition run until 10 May in the foyer of Belconnen Arts Centre.

IN “Scab”, an exhibition of works developed during Jacob Potter’s 2014 residency with Canberra Contemporary Art Space, the artist explores materiality, pictorial space and the possibilities of paint by experimenting with materials and method. M16 ARTSPACE at 21 Blaxland Crescent Griffith, has an opening night tomorrow, Friday April 17 at 6pm, for “Unconflicted,” Until 3 May, 12 – 5pm Wednesday to Sunday. THE National Film and Sound Archive is welcoming the public and delegates from 40 countries, for the 71st International Federation of Film Archives congress with a special evening of free public screenings at Canberra’s Arc cinema this Friday 17 April. Movies includes ‘The Melbourne Rendezvous’ (1957, G) at 5.30pm and ‘Assault of the Rebel Girls’ (1959, Unclassified 18+) 7.30pm. Never officially released in Australia, the latter was Errol Flynn’s last film, set in the early days of the Cuban revolution. Bookings to 6248 2000.

She was instrumental in the foundation of what became the Canberra Opera Society and what is now Art Song Canberra. ‘GROUNDRUSH’ is an exhibition that presents a unique response by six artists, Rachel Bowak, Pamela Lofts, Kim Mahood, Pip McManus, Andrew Moynihan and Nic Hempel, to time spent on a gold mine in rehabilitation mode in the Tanami Desert at the Tanami Mine during the winter of 2007. This exhibition presents new and interesting perspectives on mining and the Australian landscape. It was made possible with permission of the Warlpiri Traditional Owners. MICHAEL Taylor, who lives and works in Cooma, is one of Australia’s foremost Abstract Expressionist artists, has been exhibiting regularly since 1963. His work is held in a number of important collections including those of the National Gallery of Australia, all the state and regional galleries, as well as university galleries, corporate and private collections. STRATHNAIRN Arts has a new exhibition in “ Birds, Beasts and Beauty: Works by members of the ACT Porcelain Artists Association.” The exhibition includes pieces painted to commemorate the ANZAC Day Centenary and will be officially opened by Ann McMahon at 4pm this Saturday 18 April at the Strathnairn Homestead Gallery.
