I was first elected to the Assembly on 9 January 1997, and have been fortunate to have been re-endorsed by my electorate at five subsequent elections.

My decision to not seek ALP pre-selection for the next election has involved a long period of reflection and discussion with those closest to me.

I know that after nearly two decades of public service, the majority of my adult working life, it is the right time for me to explore new horizons and new opportunities, personally and professionally.

After discussions with the Chief Minister and my caucus colleagues I will continue as Deputy Chief Minister and retain my current portfolios until the next election. I am deeply humbled by their support for me to continue in these roles and I will be working hard to advance ACT Labor’s cause and agenda in the lead-up to next year’s poll.

My passion for the Labor cause and the ACT Labor Government’s agenda is undiminished. Only a Labor government can advance a progressive and optimistic agenda for our city’s future, in tune with the aspirations of the Canberra community.

I make this announcement today knowing that a great Labor team will go to the community at the next election, led by a strong, progressive and forward thinking Chief Minister in Andrew Barr.

I am quietly satisfied by the contribution I have made over the past 18 years and I am enthusiastic about the work that is still ahead of me over the next 14 months.

I particularly look forward to seeing the first stage of a Canberra-wide light rail network begin construction next year, a project that will transform our city, lay the foundations for future stages and create jobs for thousands of Canberrans.

I am pleased that people now look to the ACT as a leader on climate change action. The significant progress that has been made in progressing the 90% renewable energy target is work, and a passion, I hope to build on in the months, and years, ahead.

The passage of Australia’s first marriage equality legislation will remain a highlight of my appointment as Attorney-General. The actions of the ACT Labor Government reinvigorated the equality debate and gave hope and consolation to those who believe in equality in the knowledge that there are governments willing to stand up for their rights.
