Smart parking coming to Canberra as industry consultation kicks off

ANDREW Barr says the benefits of Smart Parking are a step closer with the start of consultation with industry on the Smart Parking trial.

“Smart Parking is a system that is able to capture real time information on available parking spots by using technology such as in-ground sensors,” Andrew said.

“Using smart phone apps and intelligent traffic signs, smart parking systems then guide people to an available parking space. This is turn saves drivers time, reduces traffic congestion and provides a better overall user experience.

“The ACT Government has released its draft Statement of Requirements to ensure that the Smart Parking trial takes into account advice from industry on technology and opportunities for innovation. The procurement process will commence in June 2015, with the trial commencing in the first quarter of 2016.

“I am also pleased to announce that the ACT Government has engaged National ICT Australia Pty Ltd. (NICTA) as a Strategic Advisor for the Smart Parking trial. NICTA is Australia’s information and communication technology centre of excellence and a key partner in the ACT Government’s drive to establish Canberra as a smart city and centre for research and innovation.

Further information on the draft Statement of Requirements will be available from 9 May 2015 at www.procurement.act.gov.au/tenders/open_tenders. The consultation period closes 22 May 2015.
