The ACT Community Directory goes online

VOLUNTEERING and Contact ACT’s newest initiative – The ACT Community Directory has been launched.

Launched by Yvette Berry MLA, Minister for Community Services last night at Belconnen Arts Centre, this new user friendly online portal will bring reliable, accessible and up to date community information to all in the Canberra region.

Jon Cumming, Chief Digital Officer for the ACT Government was a guest speaker at the event. He noted that 80% of people who are homeless in the ACT have smartphones. This new initiative will assist more people to be able to access information on services they need, in a way that suits them.

“Over the last 2 years CONTACT Canberra (now a program of Volunteering and Contact ACT) has been reviewing our business model on how we deliver up-to-date, accessible and reliable information to the Canberra region,” said Maureen Cane, Chief Executive Officer of Volunteering and Contact ACT.

“We are delighted to have partnered with a Queensland organisation Community Information Support Services to bring the ACT Community Directory, using the national tried and tested My Community Directory platform, to Canberra.

“Our focus for the future needs to be on the people we are delivering our services to, and based on feedback from organisations and individuals, that focus needs to have a strong digital emphasis to support our face to face, over the phone service delivery.

“We are seeking to build a community resource, which provides one data set and one point of truth on community information in the Canberra region. In managing one data set for the region that all can access we will be reducing duplication, increasing efficiencies and in simple terms: people will be able to find what they are looking for!”

The ACT Community Directory hosts information on 2314 services that are being delivered out of 1989 locations by 1474 organisations. Since going live on 12 October 2015, there has already been over 40 000 searches for services.

The ACT Community Directory is at vc-act.mycommunitydirectory.com.au.
