The ACT declared a Refugee Welcome Zone

YVETTE Berry has led a group of community leaders in officially declaring the ACT a Refugee Welcome Zone as part of refugee week.

“More than 100 local government areas across Australia have declared themselves Refugee Welcome Zones but significantly the ACT is the first jurisdiction of all the Australian states and territories to be declared a Refugee Welcome Zone,” Yvette said.

“The declaration is a commitment to welcoming refugees into our community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in our community.

“It was a very proud moment today in signing the declaration to make the Australian Capital Territory a Refugee Welcome Zone, to celebrate our differences and acknowledge that these differences make our community strong.

“I was joined by Companion House, Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services of the ACT, ACT Multicultural Youth Services, Canberra Refugee Support and the Canberra Multicultural Community Forum in formally signing the declaration.

The declaration is supported and endorsed by the Refugee Council of Australia. For more information about Refugee Welcome Zones visit: refugeecouncil.org.au
