CANBERRA consumers have been warned against buying or using portable butane ‘lunchbox’ style cookers due to potential safety issues.
Simon Corbell says that recent testing of several models of the butane gas cookers, which are also known as portable gas barbeques, found faults with the cookers’ shut-off pressure valve.
“This poses a risk that the products may overheat and have the potential to cause an explosion. It is particularly concerning that people have may have packed these cookers for their Easter festivities,” Simon said.
“Compliance certification for a number of current models of the ‘lunchbox’ style cookers has been suspended by independent safety certifiers. Cookers of this type are non-compliant with Australian standards making these products not fit-for-purpose under Australian consumer law.
“Consumers who have purchased a non-compliant gas cooker may be entitled to a refund if they have proof of the purchase and can return the cooker to their retailer in good condition.
“Consumers should make enquiries with their retailer and those who do not have a proof of purchase should safely dispose of the butane cylinder.
“I strongly urge consumers not to buy or use this product as it could lead to serious injury.”
If you see a butane cooker for sale, do not buy it, and report it to Access Canberra – Fair Trading on 6207 3000.
