The Chief explains the ACT Government’s special holiday while the rest of us work

andrew barr

ANDREW Barr has explained that in April, there are a number of public holidays that will be observed. These include the Easter break and Anzac Day on the following dates:

  • Good Friday – Friday 3 April 2015;
  • Easter Saturday – Saturday 4 April 2015;
  • Easter Monday – Monday 6 April 2015; and
  • ANZAC Day – Saturday 25 April 2015.

“In addition, as Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year, ACT Public Sector enterprise agreements provide staff with a substitute holiday on the following Monday,” Andrew said.

“Monday 27 April 2015 is not a public holiday in the ACT, which is in line with other jurisdictions. The school holidays also run from Saturday 11 April to Sunday 26 April.

“As with all other holiday periods in Canberra, the ACT Government has made arrangements to minimise disruption to the community and to ensure all emergency response services are maintained. We have also been working with staff and unions for several weeks to ensure government services are maintained.

“These ACT Government services include Canberra Connect, health services and municipal services, such as ACTION bus services. In the coming weeks, ACT Government Directorates will be communicating trading hours and changes in services for Easter, Anzac Day and Monday 27 April with the community.

“It is important to note that while the start of Term 2 for students in ACT public schools is Tuesday 28 April 2015, most non-Government schools in the ACT will commence their school term on Monday 27 April. This is another reason why the government is providing information to Canberrans now to give people time to make alternative arrangements where required.

“On Monday 27 April, ACTION will run a Saturday timetable, which provides services from 6.30am to 11.30pm. To compensate for any inconvenience to commuters, it will be a fare free day. An extra 900 Rapid services will also operate, as 900 Rapid routes are located near Park and Ride and Bike and Ride facilities.

“All non-Government schools will be provided information on services available for their schools on 27 April, and parents of students are encouraged to review bus timetables or consider alternative arrangements to get their children to and from school.”
