The slow disintegration of the Canberra Times Fountain

THE Canberra Times fountain has been a centrepiece of the city since it’s installation in 1979.

The decades, however, have not been kind.

What was once an exercise in smooth symmetry is getting more than a little ragged around the edges on closer inspection.

But what to do with a battered icon?

Turn it off and cover it in up in old papers while we still can, a bit like Christo. Articles by Jack Waterford might be suitable for the purpose.

Given this city’s proclivity for keeping battered, old, ugly relics of a bygone time, let’s heritage list the thing and let it rot.

Ah yes, a relic from an era when Canberra’s public art wasn’t terrible. I say tear down some of the monstrosities like the metal monster on Gungahlin dr / Barton Hwy and the Belconnen Owl and fix up the CT Fountain instead.
