SHANE Rattenbury has officially unveiled the $1.2 million upgrade of the local Chapman Shops.

“The upgrade of the public spaces at Chapman Shops has revitalised the area, providing local residents and traders with a more accessible, vibrant and attractive centre,” Shane said.

“The upgrade at the shops includes new street furniture such as seats, a drinking fountain, picnic setting and shade structure, bike racks and bins. There have also been significant improvements to pedestrian access in and around the shops.

“Work has also been completed to improve car park safety and parking for people with disabilities and new lighting has been installed for better security. Trees and drought tolerant shrubs have been planted to provide more shade and enhance the leafy, green character of the shops.

“A new entrance sign has been installed to help passing traffic identify the centre, and visibility has been improved to the shopfronts from Perry Street.

“One highlight of the upgrade is the inclusion of a new community gathering space with views across to Black Mountain. The new picnic setting and shade structure in this space provides locals with a place to gather and relax.

“A water fountain has also been installed at the shops to give the community access to free, fresh drinking water as part of the Government’s attempt to encourage Canberrans to make water their drink of choice.

“The work is part of the ACT Government’s investment in improving access, safety, amenity and vitality at local shopping centres across Canberra.”
