Video / Kangaroo v. Cyclist on Adelaide Avenue

MONDAY’S news of a cyclist hit by a kangaroo on Adelaide Avenue got Canberra talking.

Now former Australian cricketer Bronwyn Calver has youtubed the video her bikecam was taking of the incident and posted this note:

They don’t call Canberra the Bush Capital for nothing…this accident occurred on Adelaide Avenue just off Capital Circle…I escaped relatively unscathed with no broken bones but a severely grazed and bruised elbow, grazed hip and 8 stitches in my knee…while the ‘roo did hop away, it jumped over the railing on Adelaide Ave down to State Circle where it was subsequently hit by a car and killed…four cars with five people stopped within seconds to offer much appreciated assistance…they introduced themselves to me at the time but I can’t remember their names to thank them personally…

I wonder what made the Kangaroo race out of the bush at that time of the day, a dog chasing it I would suspect. Kangaroos are rarely seen racing around in the daytime. Instead of blaming Kangaroos how about getting tougher on people who let their dogs chase wildlife.

By all this building especially in the areas where kangaroos are known to be only means more kangaroos being killed. It’s about time our national emblem was shown some respect and left alone. Surely with all the land there is some areas can be left for them.

Canberra is a ‘bush’ Capital, which involves sharing the city and suburbs with the animals who also call this land their home. We need to live in harmony with the wildlife and find a balance for residing together in this unique and wonderful environment we call our home.
