Weekend arts roundup

CANBERRA Artist Keith Bailey urges us not to forget the bombing of Hiroshima. August 6, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and his show, “Black Rain on a White Wall–Remember Hiroshima,” opens on the very day.

THE Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima includes a shrine dedicated to Sadako Sasaki and the 1000 paper cranes she created before her untimely death, Bailey’s work reflects this.

All shows including Bailey’s run August 6-23 at M16 Artspace Blaxland Cresc Griffith, August 6-23, 12 – 5pm, Wednesday – Sunday. Opening, 6pm Thursday August 6. All welcome.


QUEANBEYAN will remember Hiroshima in an evening floor talk today at Queanbeyan Library, from 6-7pm that includes refreshments and features Shirley Hesse sharing her memorabilia, and until August 14, a Queanbeyan Library display will feature items from previous Hiroshima Remembrance ceremonies held in Queanbeyan.

MUSICA Viva has English Vocal Ensemble I Fagiolini tonight, Thursday 6 August, Llewellyn Hall, at 7pm. This is extreme a cappella that ranges from the hyper-real playfulness of Janequin’s sung description of a Renaissance hunting party, to the rich imagery of a Monteverdi madrigal. Director Robert Hollingworth leads the singers and audience effortlessly through countries and centuries. The concert also features a new piece by Australian composer Andrew Schultz, commissioned for I Fagiolini and Musica Viva by Geoff Stearn. Tickets at the door.


“BRICKS to CANVAS” is the story of artists transitioning from spray can to paint brush and their rise to international recognition shows the work of eight artists in eight unique styles Members of the public are invited to Aarwun Gallery in Gold Creek this Saturday August 8 at 2 pm for afternoon drinks, a performance by Canberra’s Ukulele Republic and the opportunity to meet famous stencil artist Luke Cornish.

THE National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Peter Weir’s seminal film “Picnic at Hanging Rock” tomorrow Friday, August 7, with a one-night only exhibition of original costumes, props and posters. THE National Gallery of Australia has a new show, “Myth and Magic: art of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea,” curated by Crispin Howarth, in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery, opening to the public on August 7.

BEACH Burrito at 181 City Walk Civic & Sancho’s Dirty Laundry are presenting “Danny Trejo: The Exhibition”, Trejo’s work plus mixed media works from a mixed bag of artists across Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. The show runs for 3 weeks and all works are for sale Soundtrack for the evening provided by DJ Ill Gato with MC performances from Toddla, Shug B and Scarecrow. IF you feel like running up to the Berrima Village Hall at 2pm this Saturday, August 8, you’ll catch Canberra tenor Christopher Lincoln Bogg and composer-pianist Wendy Hiscocks in a one-hour recital of song’s by Arthur Benjamin and Ravel, as well as piano solos from “Scenes from an Australian Childhood,” a new publication of Hiscock’s music recently launched in Wirripang. No bookings required, tickets at the door.

‘THE David Pereira Cello Series’ is re-starting. It is now managed by Ainslie & Gorman, and will play in the refurbished Main Hall at Ainslie Arts Centre. The first monthly on-a-Sunday presentation is a cello and piano recital with Edward Neeman of Hungarian music.
