Weetangera oval gets a new pavilion

SHANE Rattenbury has visited the recently upgraded Weetangera Neighbourhood Oval, the project represents the final stage of the $4.0 million program to restore sportsgrounds in Weetangera, Watson and Bonython.

“The Weetangera Neighbourhood Oval is a popular and well used space and it’s really great to see these new facilities for the many clubs that use the fields,” Shane said.

“Upgrades at Weetangera Neighbourhood Oval include irrigation and resurfacing of the oval, new goal posts, a new synthetic cricket pitch and nets, sportsground floodlighting for the whole facility and a new pavilion which includes change rooms, toilets and canteen facilities. Similar grounds improvements have been completed at Watson Neighbourhood Oval and Bonython Neighbourhood Oval.

“Continuing to upgrade recreational and sporting facilities around Canberra is a government priority and we are committed to ensuring we have really great infrastructure across the city to make sure that all Canberrans, regardless of where they live, have the opportunity to be active.

“We want the ACT to be a healthy, active and productive community and want to make it as easy as possible for people to adopt healthy lifestyles. Through the provision of high quality sporting facilities around Canberra for the community to enjoy, we are focussed on creating healthy communities.

“Weetangera Neighbourhood Oval is a great space for organised sport or less structured forms of recreation, and with improvements made not only to the oval itself but the other facilities on site, I am sure that it will be well used all year round.

“It was great to be joined today by the Western District Rugby Club (Wests), Cricket ACT and the Canberra City and Suburban Cricket Association who use Weetangera Oval as their home ground, and it is my hope that these sports, local residents, runners, walkers, and everyone in between will enjoy the improvements that have been made to Weetangera Oval.”
