ALAS, Fiddler’s Green Theatre Company was coming to the Courtyard Studio with a 1950s classic, “A Taste of Honey”, written by Shelagh Delaney, but they’ve cancelled because of illness in the cast.

TOM Burlinson, star of “The Man from Snowy River” and “Phar Lap,” is known these days for playing Frank Sinatra. He’ll be at the Canberra Theatre on September 5 performing songs from the album “Sinatra at the Sands” and an add-on set from other famous Sinatra albums. YOU only have 2 days left to nominate the songs, radio programs, speeches and other sounds that should be added this year to the NFSA’s Sounds of Australia registry of historically, culturally and artistically important recordings, now in its ninth year. The range is huge – from AC/DC to Waltzing Matilda. Nominations can be submitted via nfsa.gov.au and close this Friday, September 4.

IN a FREE music event this Thursday September 3 at 7pm in the Drill Hall Gallery, the ANU New Music Ensemble will present a varied set of works from the past 50 years composed exclusively by women, ranging from established composers like Alison Knowles (USA), Pauline Oliveros (USA) and Cat Hope (AUS), to young composers like the Chloë Hobbs (AUS), Amanda Schoofs (USA) and Lauren Redhead (UK).

ALSO opening today September 3 at Beaver and running to September 22 is Nicola Dickson’s “Voyagers’ tales: Ferdinand Bauer paintings.” The work in this exhibition is inspired by the drawings of Austrian draughtsman, Ferdinand Bauer, who was aboard the HMS Investigator when it circumnavigated Australia in 1802-3.

“BRIAN Hennessey House” is a mixed media exhibition of artworks by consumers at Brian Hennessey Rehabilitation Centre presented as part of gallery@bcs’ Piece of Mind Series, which annually showcases four exhibitions of artwork by, and for, people who use art as a tool to achieve peace of mind while living with mental illness, or disability. MEANTIME around the corner at Belconnen Arts Centre (don’t confuse the two) two workshops, ‘Buried Treasure’ (Saturday September 5) and ‘Treasure Hunt’ (Saturday September 12) will be presented by local poet and writer Lizz Murphy to coincide with the ‘Hidden Treasures’ exhibition, an annual community exhibition featuring artworks by 40 local artists.


CELLIST David Pereira tells us that in his Fathers’ Day presentation at the Ainslie Arts Centre Main Hall this Sunday 2-4pm, he will join artist Carlos Barrios. “He and I will play and paint two Bach cello suites, finding some natural linking between our different art forms,” he says, adding “There should be time and inclination for some discussion too.” Tickets at the door.


THE newest exhibition at Ginninderra School House Gallery is by veteran local prizewinning artist Nik Radjic. In “Art of Colour 1″ hew shows 43 vibrant oils on canvas, acrylics and some mixed media. TUGGERANONG Arts Centre has two new exhibitions on the theme connecting to Our Environment. “Pryor Again” and “The Juggler of Gravity” open at 2:30pm this Saturday September 5 and continue until Saturday September 26. It’s the third exhibition in Tuggeranong’s Arts Centre for retired Tuggeranong GP of 20 years and established Canberra watercolourist, Pryor and this exhibition features more than 25 works. Meantime the installation by Moor, especially created for Tuggeranong Arts Centre’s Gallery Two, will bring a new perspective into the space. He was the recipient of the Exhibition Award at Sculpture in the Paddock in Yass last year.


CRAFT ACT: Craft and Design Centre is introducing its selected recipients for the 2015 Artist-in-Residence Program. Canberra textile artist Ruth Hingston will work alongside international metalsmith Jodie Hatcher, an emerging UK designer-maker. ANU Art Forum talk with Hatcher and Hingston this Thursday September 3, 1:15pm to 2om at ANU School of Art Lecture Theatre FREE, No booking required.


SYDNEY artist Lucas Davidson’s installation “Embedded in You” closes this Sunday September 6 at 5pm, so hurry to ANCA Gallery at 1 Rosevear Place Dickson.
