Queanbeyan brings back its alcohol restriction zones

council chambers

QUEANBEYAN City Council is looking to renew and slightly expand the alcohol restricted areas across the local government area.

“The proposed alcohol restriction zones are to take effect on 1 July 2016,” a spokesperson for the council said.

“Existing alcohol restricted zones expired at the end of last year and Council is now looking to add the area outside the Jerrabomberra Tavern and around the Jerrabomberra shops.

“Queen Elizabeth Park, in the CBD, which is currently being refurbished, was already an alcohol-free zone. However Council will now include the river banks on both sides, including Ray Morton and Wanniassa Park, and from the low bridge up to the suspension bridge.

“Declaration of an Alcohol Free Zone or Alcohol Prohibited Area is done under the Local Government Act and makes it an offence to consume alcohol within the specified area. The zones gives police officers the power to warn anyone consuming alcohol within a restricted zone, to confiscate alcohol or issue an infringement notice to persisting offenders.

“Alcohol Free Zones apply to public roads, car parks, lane ways and footpaths. Alcohol Prohibited Areas apply to public parks, beaches and reserves. Restrictions in both zones are able to be enforced by police.

“The proposed renewal and expansion of the areas will be open for public comment for 30 days, from Monday 15th February until Tuesday 15th March 2016, and will be on display at the following locations:

  • Queanbeyan City Council, Customer Service 257 Crawford Street, Queanbeyan (8.30am – 4.30pm).
  • The Queanbeyan Library at 6 Rutledge St, Queanbeyan (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri 9.30am – 6pm, Thurs 9.30am – 7pm and Sat 9.30am – 4pm).
