Crackdown on backyard mechanics

MICK Gentleman and Chris Bourke have met with local motor vehicle repairers in the Tuggeranong Valley as part of the ACT Government’s Pop Up Cabinet.

A focus of discussions was ways to address the issue of unlicensed motor vehicle repairers operating illegally in the ACT.

“As a former motor mechanic and car enthusiast, I have a vested interest in ensuring that work carried out on motor vehicles in Canberra is undertaken in a safe and professional manner by appropriately licensed mechanics,” Mick said.

“Backyard mechanics operating illegally was an issue in my previous role as Executive Director of the ACT Motor Traders Association, and it is something that still needs attention based on concerns expressed by the businesses that Minister Bourke and I visited today.

“Making sure repairers are operating legitimately helps minimise issues associated with vehicle safety and provides the community with increased confidence in the motor vehicle repair sector.”

Chris said it was important for small businesses in the automotive sector that every operator was on a level playing field.

“As Minister for Small Business, I’m committed to making sure we create an environment that allows local businesses to be as successful as possible,” Chris said.

“Ensuring that all motor vehicle repairers are licensed will help promote a level playing field in the motor vehicle repair sector. It will also protect the reputation of individuals and businesses doing the right thing by the law.”

Mick said the ACT Government would be taking action to stamp out illegal operators.

“As a result of industry concerns, I’ve asked Access Canberra to undertake a targeted compliance program to detect motor vehicle repairers operating illegally in the ACT. This program will commence in May 2016,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
