Northbourne to be paved with gold?

ALISTAIR Coe says the government’s decision to spend $2 million on gold plated street works along Northbourne Avenue is peculiar given the huge number of individual street upgrades which are needed across the rest of Canberra.

“This is fundamentally a question of priorities,” Alistair said.

“Before looking at upgrades to Northbourne Avenue did the Minister examine other footpaths around the city which are in dire need of attention, for example just blocks away in Braddon? Every week I receive complaints about poorly maintained footpaths in a range of suburbs.

“The government is scrambling to focus as much as possible on Northbourne Avenue before signing contracts on an unviable light rail project that will destroy the ‘avenue’ nature of the thoroughfare by cutting down trees.

“The Barr government would be better serving Canberrans by making sure it maintains suburban footpaths through a proper needs based process.

“I hope the government isn’t prioritising new footpaths along Northbourne Avenue over basic amenity upgrades which are needed right across Canberra,” Mr Coe concluded.

Now the neglect of Civic will be worse. The government says it can’t replace dead or killed street trees in Civic but has Billions to spend on Light Rail.
