Budget 16 / Thumbs up from the P&C council

PUBLIC-school parent group the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations (Council), has welcomed the $55 million allocated in today’s ACT budget for new education initiatives.

The council was especially pleased to see $21.5 million allocated to support children with complex needs and challenging behaviours.

In a media release the council said it fully supported the findings of last year’s Expert Panel on Students with Complex Needs and Challenging Behaviour and believes all 50 recommendations of their report (titled “Schools for All”) must be fully implemented.

“Responding properly to the ‘Schools for All’ report is a large undertaking,” said Viv Pearce, Council vice president.

“It is great to see that substantial funding has been allocated to match the task.

“Parents and schools will be relieved to have extra specialists, such as psychologists, available to help.”

“Progress on implementing the recommendations has been slow to date. We hope that this additional funding and staffing will move along the reform and cultural change

which is needed.”
