ZED Seselja says the Turnbull Coalition will invest $12 million towards a new purpose-built facility at The Australian National University (ANU) to help grow Australia’s cyber security workforce.

Minister for Defence Senator the Hon Marise Payne and Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja announced the partnership between Defence’s cyber agency, the Australian Signals Directorate, and ANU in Canberra today.

“The funding will be used to create a joint facility on the ANU Acton Campus in its new building planned for the Research School of Computer Science and the Mathematical Sciences Institute,” Zed said.

“The facility will house up to 70 students, academics and staff. The investment will enable ASD and ANU to collaborate on research in areas such as high-performance computing, data analytics and cyber security.

“This partnership will help attract the best and brightest from across Australia, so that we can grow the workforce required to deliver the outcomes of the Cyber Security Strategy and the 2016 Defence White Paper.

“The Turnbull Government’s strong cyber security strategy underpins the innovation, growth and prosperity necessary for a modern digital economy,” Minister Payne said.

“Defence is a major employer in the ACT with more than 16,000 Defence personnel based in the ACT.

“We have a world-class education sector in Canberra and today’s announcement proves the Turnbull Government’s commitment to investing in education and research, particularly in the ACT,” Zed said.

“Not only is this a real boost for the ACT economy, but also for young people keen to gain skills in key innovative areas.”
