A statement from Stephen Parker about the Brumbies

THIS just in from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra, Stephen Parker.

In a statement at the Legislative Assembly yesterday, the ACT Chief Minister said that he had been told “categorically” that no government officials are implicated in matters that are currently affecting the ACT Brumbies.

University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker has made a similar statement today.

“On 24 September 2015 I was visited by Robert Kennedy, the chairman of the Brumbies board, and Michael Jones, the CEO of the Brumbies. I arranged for the University’s lawyer to be present.

“We were told that certain material had been sent to ACT Policing but we were assured that the University and its employees were not implicated.

“Mr Kennedy also assured me on 15 November that no allegations were being made against the University; an assurance he repeated on 8 March 2016.

“At no stage has the Australian Rugby Union or its consultants sought any comment from the University nor shown us any material. Had they done so, we could have explained quite simply the nature of the transactions between the Brumbies and the University, and a considerable amount of difficulty might have been avoided,” Professor Parker said.

Given the matter is currently before a court, the University does not propose to make any further comment at this stage.
