Canberra Theatre packed with entertaining shows

IF YOU WONDERED why it’s so hard to get a parking spot near the Canberra Theatre this week, consider the two big shows running there.

Running until Saturday  in the larger  theatre is “Carnival of the Animals”, created by circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz and director of  Circa,  bringing  the joy of the animal kingdom to the stage in a powerful physical theatre extravaganza for children and adults alike.

Meantime in the Playhouse the “Wharf Revue” is running to enthusiastic houses.

Spotted onstage at yesterday’s media call were two familiar figures. “I’m not your glove   puppet on a string,” proclaims Pauline Hanson lookalike Drew Forsythe in a scene where the assertive politician joins Senator Jacque Lambie (Katrina Retallick) to take on a very superior sounding Senator George Branson (Phil Scott).

“I will not be lectured to by some homogenous white male,” Lambie/Retallick declares before she and Hanson/Forsythe burst into song – “I’m A Woman. W.O.M.I.N.”, or maybe “W.A.M.U.N.” They’re not quite sure.

Either way, it has Canberra’s politically-savvy audience in stitches.

“The Wharf Revue”, at The Playhouse, until Saturday September 24,  and “Carnival of The Animals,” at the Canberra Theatre until Saturday September 17, bookings for both to canberratheatrecentre.com.au or 6275 2700.
