ALZHEIMER’S Australia ACT have organised “Honour Celebrate and Reflect” for people to pay tribute to those affected by dementia on Saturday.

The ceremony will not only acknowledge sufferers and their families but also volunteers, health and community care professionals, researchers and advocates.

CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia ACT Jan Chorley says it is a special event aimed at connecting people and building support in the community.

Chorley says: “It is also important to acknowledge the people who are often behind the scenes of making dementia a priority such as in research, diagnosis and excellence in support.

“It is invaluable to acknowledge the contribution people with dementia and families provide in advocating for best practice in their and others future, and ensuring the voice of people with dementia is heard and respected in shaping that future.

“There will be representatives invited to read a reflection, performances by a local talented vocalist and a candle lighting ceremony to honour those people affected by dementia.”

More than 353,800 people have dementia in Australia. The number of people with dementia is expected to be almost 900,000 by 2050.

The ceremony will be held at the Charles Sturt University, 15 Blackall Street, and Barton. National Dementia Helpline: 1800 100500
