‘Deteriorating’ visitor centre to get a facelift

TIDBINBILLA’S Visitor Centre will start maintenance work tomorrow to its “deteriorating” mud-bricks. Tidbinbilla Visitors Centre

Regional manager from ACT Parks and Conservation Brett McNamara says: “Unfortunately due to the age of the building and the impact of the climate, some of the mud bricks have begun to deteriorate.”

The centre was built in 2000 by TT Architecture who used sustainable building materials such as pressed earth mud-bricks sourced from local materials.

McNamara says: “For this reason the building will undergo some maintenance to preserve it.  A waterproof membrane render will be applied to the exterior of the building in order to protect the mud bricks and the integrity of the building.

“The finished product will be a similar coloured render to the current exterior bricks and the beautiful moths on the entrance wall will be kept intact as a feature of the building.

“The original mud bricks will still be visible in their original form from inside the Visitor Centre.”

Work will take approximately six weeks to complete. During this time the centre will remain open and the reserve’s program of guided walks and activities will continue as scheduled.
