February was hot and dry

The Bureau of Meteorology informs us that rainfall was well below average across the ACT during February.

Daytime temperatures were also well above average, with a late warm spell at the end of the month.

Highlights included:

  • Fewest February rain days since 2006
  • Above average maximum temperatures
  • Heatwave brings latest day of 38 °C on record

Canberra Airport recorded 23 mm of rain during February 2016, less than half the historical average. Rain was recorded on four days, below the average of 7 days and the fewest since 2006, with most of the rain falling during the first four days of the month.

Daytime temperatures were well above average during February, with particularly warm temperatures towards the end of the month.

Canberra Airport recorded 5 consecutive days above 32 °C between the 22nd and 26th, with temperatures reaching 38.0 °C on the 25th. This is the first time a temperature of 38 °C or higher has been recorded this late in the season. In total, twelve days reached at least 30 °C at Canberra Airport, well above the historical average of eight days. Minimum temperatures were closer to average, with cool nights mid-month.
