Fire at the zoo

ACT Fire & Rescue are responding to reports of a fire at the National Zoo and Aquarium.

Firefighters have arrived to find what they believe to be a maintenance shed alight.

Three fire pumpers, two fire tankers, Bronto, breathing ape earths support crew and commander are on scene.

Fire crews are working to extinguish the fire. Several staff have relocated to another area of the property.


Firefighters are continuing to work on extinguishing the blaze which has impacted on a number of sheds used to store maintenance equipment.

The on site hotel, bungalow and tree house accommodation facilities have been evacuated as a precaution.

Zoo staff are taking care of the animals nearby to ensure their safety and welfare.

The zoo itself is still operating and not impacted on by the fire.


The fire has been fully extinguished. Fire crews are now mopping up to ensure there are no hot spots remaining.

The cause will be investigated but it’s not believed to be suspicious at this time.

The whole facilty was evacuated and will remained closed to the public for the rest of today.
