CANBERRA residents are being urged to report any sightings of the nationally endangered spotted quoll following two sightings in the last two months.

“In June, a Canberra man took photos of a Spotted-tailed Quoll eating roadkill on Boboyan Road near Namadgi and then last week we received another report of one near Calwell although unfortunately this time it was itself roadkill,” said Daniel Iglesias, Director, ACT Parks and Conservation.

“ACT Parks and Conservation has only received a few reports of sightings of the Spotted-tailed Quoll in Canberra in the past decade so to have two confirmed reports in the last two months shows the species is still residing in the area which is fantastic news.

“I’d like to urge anyone who sees a Spotted-tailed Quoll to try to take a picture of it if they can and let us know where they saw it. Spotted-tailed Quolls are quite striking in appearance. They are brown in colour, about the size of a cat, have a long bushy tail and are covered in white spots. Reports can be made via contacting Access Canberra on 13 22 81. This will help us to get a better understanding of the spread of this beautiful species.”

Daniel said the eastern quolls were doing well at Mulligans Flat after being released earlier this year and it is hoped young will emerge in spring this year.

“A great opportunity to try and see a quoll is by going on a night walk at Mulligans Flat. These are run every week.”
