Greens promise millions to link ACTION with light rail

THE ACT Greens have announced an investment of $57 million into the ACTION bus network to improve bus frequency and network coverage across all of Canberra.

“This plan is about investing in the things that make people’s lives better every day. It’s about putting the community first and making it easier to get around our city,” said ACT Greens Leader and transport spokesperson Shane Rattenbury.

“Getting around Canberra affects every single member of our community who doesn’t want to spend hours stuck on the road instead of with family and friends.

“Sitting in traffic is bad for people and bad for the planet. What Canberrans desperately need is more convenient, affordable public transport to get around our city.

“The funding will integrate bus routes conveniently and seamlessly with Stage 1 light rail to allow for fast and convenient interchanging at Gungahlin, Dickson and Civic; and ensure that Canberra stays connected as our population grows.

ACT Greens candidate for Murrumbidgee and seniors spokesperson Caroline Le Couteur said:

“The ACT Greens will make sure no one is left behind as our city grows. We are boosting the flexible bus service by $1.5 million to ensure that Canberrans with disabilities, or who are older and less mobile, can get around easily and participate fully in our community.

“Every Canberran should be able to quickly, conveniently and affordably get around our city, and having a disability or being an older person should not be a barrier to getting good public transport.

“The ACT Greens have already committed to extending light rail to Woden and beyond, and I am pleased to announce this additional funding to ensure that our bus and light rail networks are truly integrated.”
