Attorney-General Gordon Ramsey calls it “significant”, saying: “Chief Justice Kiefel has earned the respect of the judiciary and the Australian legal profession throughout her tenure on the High Court bench.

“I’m confident that this will continue as she takes on the important position of Chief Justice.”

The ACT Law society has also applauded the appointment, labelling it as “historic”.

The ACT Law Society’s president, Sarah Avery says: “Justice Kiefel’s promotion to Australia’s highest judicial office is an inspiration for all women in the legal profession.

“Her determination, hard work, and commitment to the law make her an exceptional role model for all young people considering a career in law.”

In 2007 Attorney-General Phillip Ruddock announced Kiefel as the nominee to the High Court of Australia, making her the third female High Court Justice.

Kiefel will start her new position as High Court Chief Justice after Robert French’s retirement on January 30.
