Labor ups the road duplication ante

ANDREW Barr says a re-elected Labor Government will invest in better roads across Canberra to ensure we maintain our existing world class road network, create jobs and make it even easier for people to move around our city.

“Labor’s Better Suburbs Plan includes investment in a number of key roads around Canberra, including the duplication of William Slim Drive between the Barton Highway and Ginninderra Drive, Gundaroo Drive from Gungahlin Drive to the Barton Highway, and the duplication of Athllon Drive between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive,” Andrew said.

“This will follow on from stage one of the Gundaroo Drive upgrade between Gungahlin Drive and Mirrabei Drive/Anthony Rolfe Avenue, the duplication of Aikman Drive, Ashley Drive, Horse Park Drive, Cotter Road, and the upgrade of the Barton Highway roundabout, which are all currently underway. Major road construction of the Majura Parkway and Constitution Avenue were also completed earlier this year.

“Labor has a strong track record of investing in better roads across Canberra suburbs. It’s all part of our plan to build a better transport network with world-class roads, an integrated public transport network and great cycling and walking infrastructure.

“We will also conduct a road resealing blitz, with $6 million to be invested across the city to ensure our roads are maintained and safe for all road users. This builds on our resealing program, which last financial year saw more than one million square metres of roads resurfaced.

“Road resurfacing plays an important role in keeping our roads well maintained and safe, while also extending their life.

“Labor will also invest in better intersections in Belconnen, Gungahlin and Woden, with upgrades to be constructed at:

  • Kuringa Drive and Owen Dixon Drive (Belconnen)
  • Southern Cross Drive and Starke Street (Belconnen)
  • Belconnen Way and Springvale Drive (Belconnen)
  • The roundabout at Gundaroo Drive/Anthony Rolfe Avenue/Mirrabei Drive (Gungahlin)
  • Launceston Street and Irving Street (Woden)

“Finally Labor will fund the design of a number of new roads, including Athllon Drive, the Nudurr Drive extension, Tharwa Drive duplication from Woodcock Drive to Pockett Avenue, and William Hovell Drive duplication northbound.

“Labor’s plan for better roads will see an investment of $141 million for key duplications, upgraded intersections and additional road resurfacing to keep our city moving.”
