Lake Burley Griffin Guardians gird their loins to fight development

perspective

THE Lake Burley Griffin Guardians are hosting a public meeting at Hughes Community Centre, Hughes Shops on Wednesday July 27 from 6-7.30 pm.

“The appropriation of Lake Burley Griffin’s public parks for commercial and residential development raises serious questions about government planning, community consultation and the protection of our Lake and its parklands,” a spokesperson for the Guardians said.

“The purpose of the meeting is to expose concerns and issues to public scrutiny.

“The meeting will have short presentations by experts and Government representatives followed by a session for questions, statements and motions for the ACT and Federal Governments.

“If you care about our lakeside parks and their future please come along and show your support. Parking is available in Whittle Street behind the shops.”

“For further information visit lakeburleygriffinguardians.org.au or email lakeburleygriffinguardians@gmail.com

“Acton Park, West Basin is an important urban lakeside green space that is to be appropriated for a building estate. Its informal use for recreation such as ball games, concerts, family picnics, restaurants, markets, recreation facilities, festivals and playgrounds for young children will be lost forever.

“The lake will be filled in up to 80m from the existing northern shore and have a 650m long promenade and some garden areas. The estate apartment blocks commencing at the 4 storeys (height of Acton Village) stepping up to 6 storeys and will commence approximately at of mid length of the existing jetty.

“There will be a lack of public access and public use due to minimal public parking. Visitors to future events such as Floriade will have no parking. Traffic congestion will arise due to the intense occupation of buildings packed into the park and the new large intersection acrossCommonwealth Avenue.

“Vistas across the lake to the mountains beyond will be blocked by the 6 storey buildings alongside Commonwealth Avenue.

“The visual impact of the building complex will spoil the urban form of the City planned with lake parklands between the lake and the City buildings.

“There will be detrimental environmental impact from the additional urban runoff into a basin with poor water through-flow, removal of trees and bird habitats, probable impact of night sky pollution, and heat build-up from the excessive concrete structures in this era of climate change.”
