The Lake re-opens to swimming

THE National Capital Authority is advising the community and Lake Burley Griffin (the Lake) recreational users that most of the Lake has been re-opened to swimming and full emersion activities.

“East Basin remains closed but is expected to reopen early next week,” a spokesperson said.

“The Lake was closed from Saturday, 3 September, as a precautionary measure during the minor flood event. The NCA undertook water quality samplings at key beach sites over the last two weeks and it was confirmed there was elevated bacteria levels in the whole of the lake. Under the Guidelines for Recreational Water Quality, two consecutive negative samples must be obtained before reopening the Lake. Water quality samplings will be undertaken again next week before opening East Basin.

“The elevated bacteria levels could be attributed to several sources, including high flows in urban storm-water and domestic and rural animal waste runoff.”
