MEEGAN Fitzharris has announced a plan to transform Northbourne Avenue into an inviting boulevard where pedestrians and cyclists can feel safe and move around more easily.

“Consultation with local businesses and residents will begin in coming weeks on the $2 million Verge Refurbishment Project to upgrade the path network on Northbourne Avenue between Greenway Street and Barry Drive/Cooyong Street,” Meegan said.

“Northbourne Avenue has special significance as Canberra’s northern gateway. The ACT Government is committed to renewing Northbourne Avenue, and making it more people-friendly.

“Part of this plan, outlined in our City and Gateway Urban Renewal Strategy, is to transform Northbourne Avenue into an inviting public boulevard serviced by light rail and improved walking and cycling infrastructure.

“Stage 1 of the Northbourne Avenue Verge Refurbishment Project will kick off this work, with a focus on the verges between Greenway Street and Barry Drive/Cooyong Street. The existing 1.2 metre wide path on this section of Northbourne Avenue will be removed and replaced with a new 2.5 metre wide path.

“Footpath widening will support safe active travel in this highly urban area, providing a dedicated space for walking and cycling away from general traffic and make this part of the city more accessible.

“To plan for Canberra’s growth, alleviate congestion and enhance our liveability, we need to improve our public transport system and make active travel an easier, more attractive option.”

Meegan said there will also be a period of 12 months where no bollards will trialled in the area, to help develop a more cohesive public space.

“Different verge bollards have been installed along Northbourne Avenue by business owners over time, which has created an inconsistent look and feel. These will be removed in consultation with adjacent businesses to provide an uncluttered and more cohesive public space. Following the 12 month trial the outcomes of having no bollards will be assessed.

“The implementation of further verge improvements on Northbourne Avenue will be assessed following this first stage of works and will be subject to further funding.”
