Police warning of bad $50 notes

counterfeit 50

ACT Policing is urging the community to be on the lookout for counterfeit $50 notes that are currently circulating the region.

A number of incidents involving counterfeit notes have been reported to police in the past two months.

Police have been called to more than 35 businesses over the past two months in Canberra.

Police are urging the public to check their notes. If you’re a store employee, take the time to look at the note before handing back change or putting it in the cash register. If the note doesn’t look legitimate don’t accept it.

When a $50 note is held to light, a seven pointed star within a circle is formed by four points on one side of the banknote, combining perfectly with three points on the other side.

A counterfeit banknote is usually of poor quality and appears to be of different material.

Police are urging anyone who may be aware of the production of counterfeit currency or who has received one of these counterfeit notes to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via act.crimestoppers.com.au and quoting reference number 5827411. Information can be provided anonymously.

Police remind people they should not report crime information via Facebook and Twitter pages.
