THE Bureau of Meteorology has updated the Flood Watch for the Queanbeyan/Molonglo Rivers at 9.55am this morning. In addition to this the Bureau also issued a Severe Weather Warning at 11.29am this morning for the chance of localised flash flooding in the Queanbeyan Area.

There is a greater than 70% chance of flooding occurring within the Queanbeyan River. Googong Dam is currently at 99% capacity this rain has the potential to raise river levels in the region.

Queanbeyan SES Public Information Officer Brent Hunter urged residents to stay out of flood water.

“It is extremely dangerous and has the potential to take your life, submerged hazards, sewage and other contaminants can end up in the water during floods,” Brent said.

“The Queanbeyan unit has 100 active volunteers all trained to respond to complex tasks expected of them.

“We have flood rescue technicians and highly trained boat operators who will be on call throughout the day and overnight, entering flood water is not worth the risk to your life and certainly not worth the risk to our rescue operators, stay out so we don’t have to get you out.

The Queanbeyan Unit has taken delivery of sand for sandbagging as required.

“residents can come and collect sandbags to protect their property,” Queanbeyan SES Local Controller Robert Cunneen said.

“Sandbags can be collected from our facility at 34 Erin Street Queanbeyan; I just ask that residents take only what they need.

“The Queanbeyan SES will be closely monitoring the situation as it develops throughout the afternoon and overnight. Residents should take the time to prepare their homes for the severe weather, cleaning gutters and securing loose items in your yard.”
